Stunning sgraffito vase

A stunning vase made in 1961 by Marian Zawadsky, decorator and artistic leader at Tilgmans in Gothenburg. It measures c 37 cm and outstrips everything I've ever seen of Zawadskys hand. Soon to be posted on the website.

Bottoms up

Earlier we've pointed out Hans-Agne Jakobsson as an underestimated designer of lighting. In this matter the relative lack of interest in swedish potter Tom Möller (1914-2009) is even more startling. Tom and his wife Grete Möller ran a studio in Stockholm between 1943-70. Though mainly associated with Reijmyre glass (Tom also worked for Alsterbro and Lindshammar), Möller's ceramic pieces are far more scarce and characteristically interesting.

The simple and functional shapes of both glass and ceramics are by all means of high standard. However, it's in the surface designs that Möller's potency truly stand out. The pattern-like decors, even in solitary figures, are always of infallible and unpredictable colour sense. It's a bothering thought that Möller never put his mind to fabrics and wallpapers...

Putting his signature on pieces Möller generally abstracted the specific decor with a title and a symbol. These are in themselves pieces of art and indicate a sincere respect and pride of the individual works. It's about time that we pay them the same respect.

På Femte Våningen vet att uppskatta Stig Lindberg och hans hand ligger bakom ett antal föremål såväl i vårt hem som på sajten. Nytillkommen är boken "Stig Lindberg Swedish Artist and Designer" från 1963. Inte samma referensverk som G. Eronns men å andra sidan ett designföremål i sig själv (med eller utan skyddsomslag), och inte att dölja i en bokhylla. Här i sällskap med "Stickans" "Jardinjär" för NKs Textilkammare och ströare ur Colorado och LB.

På Femte Våningen do know to appreciate Stig Lindberg and his hand lay behind a number of objects in our home and on our website. The book "Stig Lindberg Swedish Artist and Designer" from 1963 is the latest newcomer. Not as good a reference as G. Eronn's but on the other hand a design object in itself (with or without dustcover), and not to be hidden in a shelf. Jag har samlat dessa askfat eller visitkortshållare i form av djur ett antal år nu. Apor, hyenor, bulldoggs, hästar, isbjörnar, katter - vissa med Rörstrandstämpel, vissa utan. Tidigare har jag fått uppgift om att dessa producerades mellan 1900-1910 och att ursprunget är Rörstrand, Sverige. Utifrån bilden ovan, från en faksimil av en produktkatalog från Kupittaan Savi, finns dock skäl att ifrågasätta detta. Om än bildkvaliteten är dålig råder inga tvivel om att formen är densamma som på mina apor. Noterbart i sammanhanget är dock att det hos mina apor finns skillnader utöver märkningen: Då den gröna glasyren täcker även undersidan på den märkta apan är detta inte fallet för den märkta, samt att glasyren håller högre kvalitet på den senare. Detta förhållande gäller för alla mina djur. Då det tidigare har föresvävat mig att de omärkta kan vara sekunda är mitt antagande nu att de är finska. Kupittaan Savis keramik har i regel en råare glasyr och är ofta omärkt. Förmodligen är formarna ursprungligen deras som sedermera sålts till Sverige och Rörstrand.

I've been collecting these animal ashtrays or business card holders for quite a few years now. Apes, hyenas, bulldogs, horses, polar bears, cats - some of them bearing Rörstrand marks, others not. It has been suggested that these animals was produced sometime 1900-1910 and that they originate from Rörstrand, Sweden. The above posted picture from a facsimile of a Kupittaan Savi catalogue, however, suggest otherwise. In spite of the poor quality of the picture there should be no doubt that it depicts the shape of my apes. Notable in this sense is that the two apes above has some differences besides the marking. As can be seen the green glaze cover the underside of the unmarked, but not the marked, and that the latter has better quality of glaze. This difference holds for all of my animals, marked or unmarked. I've earlier held for possible that the unmarked might be second rated, but now I suggest that these are from Finland. The Kupittaan Savi ceramics has generally a rough glaze and are often unmarked. Probably the moulds were originally theirs and later sold to Sweden and Rörstrand.

Vas i sgraffito av Josef Ekberg för Gustavsberg

Sgraffito avser en teknik där man låter ett motiv framträda genom att skrapa bort massa från godsets släta yta. Den mest namnkunniga av Svenska formgivare är i dessa sammanhang Josef Ekberg (1877-1945) som var verksam vid Gustavsberg 1889-1945. Ekberg arbetade i denna teknik ända fram till 1930 så trots att det rör sig om genomarbetade unikat är hans Sgraffitoalster ganska förekommande. I regel är dock dekoren blå mot en turkos bakgrund medan färgställningen på den här blott 13 cm höga vasen knappast förekommer alls. Den är signerad 1902.

Sgraffito refers to a tecnique in which the artist carve out a motif in relief. The most renowned swedish artist is in this sense Josef Ekberg (1877-1945) who was active at Gustavsberg 1889-1945. Ekberg used this technique as late as 1930, so even though the works are unique and thoroughly worked they are quite common. The decor, though, is generally blue against a turquose background, while the colours of this 13 cm high vase hardly occurs at all. It is signed 1902.
